Hi Jon,
I know that you enjoy the new Canadian program that permits you to
experiment with your aircraft just about any way you wish and I sincerely
wish you the very best of luck with all the changes you make to your
Coupe,
I even think some are good ideas but that does not change the fact that if
our friends in the USA copy these changes with out a proper FAA approved
procedure they put their pilots license at risk and also may put their
A&P's license at risk.
In the current case you have suggested that thicker oil in the landing
gear
struts is a good idea and it seems to work well for you. I am glad that it
does seem to be working for you so far. The question I have for you and
the
rest of the list is have you done the engineering calculations to see if
by
making the gear struts harder you have transferred loads to the weak rear
spar that it is not able to deal with over some reasonable number of firm
or hard landings? With out proper calculations or engineering small
changes
to important systems can cause very poor results. This is why we have a
system of STC's so that changes to an aircraft that may effect its
airworthiness are reviewed by trained people who can see the relationship
between the proposed change and the rest of the aircraft. They can and do
ask the right questions before they approve such changes for use on our
aircraft.
Jon, you may have all of these qualifications and you may have done all of
the required thinking to determine that this is safe and prudent. If you
have please get a STC for the change so that we may all know that it is a
safe thing to do to our aircraft or have Univair issue a Service Letter
that approves this change. That would be a great help to all of us.
As I said earlier I like many of your ideas but in fairness to the rest of
the list and particularly to new members of the list please be sure that
you indicate that your experiments are just that and that when they are
not
approved procedures that it is clear in your email that they are only
ideas
that you are trying and not something that any Coupe owner (at least in
the
USA) can do to his or her Coupe.
Best regards,
Vern

Craig.
Yes I do use gear oil in the main gear. This is my second coupe I've
owned and I've used 90w gear oil on both of them. It made a noticeable
difference to the softness on landing. You can check how well your
present oil is doing it's damping job by simply jacking up the plane as
I discribed and lift the wheel quickly all the way up. There should be a
substantial damping action. Also remember, you can't push it up nearly
as fast as a hard landing can, so try to imagine how it would work with
another 1200 pounds shoving it up. The damping is only the oil being
squished through a small hole. If the oil is thicker, it goes through
more slowly, giving a softer landing. Try it, you may like it.
