It's not clear from your e-mail exactly what the problem was. What did your trusty A&P do to fix it? True, the most common cause is deposits on the valve stem, but they can get there and be problematic for a number of reasons. Basically, if the valve/guide clearance is correct, the engine temps are correct, the engine does not have an oil control problem, the mixture is not too rich, there's not too much lead buildup, etc., etc., etc., then you will not have problems with valve sticking. Chronic valve sticking is often a result of excessive wear on the business end of the guide. This is a normal result of time, to a certain extent, one reason why Continentals need to be topped more often. The excess clearance prevents the deposits from being scraped from the valve stem and they accumulate until the fill the space. When the pilot throttles back, the heads and guides cool and contract, and the valve sticks. This is also a common cause of "morning sickness" where the engine ran fine the day before but the valve stuck when the engine cooled down. If you use 100LL regularly, you may find that using TCP helps prevent the deposits from accumulating. Many folks swear by Marvel Mystery Oil in the fuel. This may help as MMO's major attribute is that it is a solvent. It is not, however, approved for use in aircraft. I personally would rather find and correct the problem.
