----[Please read http://ercoupers.com/disclaimer.htm before following any advice in this forum.]---- The regulations require that you have 18 months experience as an airframe or Powerplant mechanic, (or 30 months combined) prior to taking the written test. After you pass the written test, you must pass a practical test. The practical test is given by a designated examiner. I have not read the regulations on this recently, but as I recall, the experience required was rather broad. I.e., it could be gained supervising, modifying, repairing or actually doing the maintaining. If you have been working with an A&P, that person can certify that you have the experience required to take the written tests. I say tests, because as I recall, they are a 3 part test - theory, maintenance, and applications - or something to that effect. If you are seriously considering it, I would recommend reading the requirements - FAR part 43 I believe-and then go from there. Anyway, I know that going to an approved school is just one of the ways you can get the experience. Lynn Nelsen ==^================================================================
