Mike,

It may be necessary to borrow the town cop with a radar gun on an evening
with absolutely still air and someone to certify we're at 1260 gross on a
415-C with 13 degrees of up travel and see.

I just looked through 10 old Coupe books and didn't find a trustworthy
number for the minimum flying speed (stall) in landing configuration.

According to the NPRM published at
http://www.faa.gov/avr/afs/sportpilot/sprtnprm.htm the FAA says (in
adjacent
paragraphs, no less):
"A light-sport aircraft would have a maximum stall speed in the landing
configuration (VS0) of 39 knots. This value for a maximum stall speed is a
characteristic of low-performance aircraft and would assist in ensuring
that
light-sport aircraft possess handling characteristics commensurate with
the
training and experience of sport pilots. It is also consistent with
foreign
airworthiness standards for similar performance aircraft.
"A light-sport aircraft would have a maximum stall speed in the landing
configuration without the use of lift-enhancement devices (VS1) of 44
knots.
The FAA selected this value to allow for the use of simple lift-enhancing
systems that can result in a 5-knot stall speed decrease. With this limit,
if more effective lift-enhancement systems are used on the aircraft, the
resulting VS0 would be lowered further . The FAA recognizes that this
limitation, combined with the VS0 limit, also would limit the maximum
speed
of the aircraft."
I don't know which of these numbers we have to really meet: 39 knots or 44
knots. 39 knots is just under 45 mph while 44 knots is 50.6 which I'm
sure
I could meet with 13 degrees of up travel.

I sent in my comments. I guess we'll have to wait and see what we see.

Subject: [COUPERS-FLYIN] Sport Pilot Gross Weight

I heard recently that the gross weight for the sport pilot license will
be going up from the proposed 1232 to 1280. The person I heard it from
is a reliable sorce, though it's still possible he may have his facts
wrong.

Just wondering if anyone else had heard this? And if, by chance, it's
true will the coupe now make it? Or will the stall requirements still
keep it out?
