I think you will find the Master switch as originally installed on 415 C, etc, was a multiple function switch, switching the battery on/off the electrical system; and the field winding circuit on/off to the generator. There was also a generator fuse (30Amp) in the circuit , conected in the circuit from the B terminal of the regulator( may have been replaced by a circuit breaker). See page 53, figure 39 of the Ercoupe Service manual.
