Hi Paul; I have a 337 approved for the split elevator addition to the
415-D model. This modification does not include the low speed cushion
spring.
I have flown the 415-C with the trim crank on the panel, a 415-C
with regular trim, a 415-D with the 9 degree restriction required by the
type certificate, a 415-D without the 9 degree restriction, and an Alon
with the split elevator (no low speed warning spring). The 415-D with the
9 degree restriction is not a delight to land. You must keep the speed up
in order to be able to flare to cushion the landing. The 415-C and the
415-D without the restriction are much easier to land, but you still do
not want to get slow on the approach. The Alon, with the split elevator
seems to have much more elevator power, and is definitely easier to land.
You can even get a little slow, and still salvage the landing without
adding a lot of power.
If you have a split elevator, or can obtain one, I would recommend
you go ahead with the installation (after you get the blessing of your
local FAA maintenance representative, of course).
Send me your address, and I will send you a copy of my 337. It has
not been completed, because I have not yet painted the Coupe and completed
all the paperwork from the rebuild. Just call me slow! BUT, it has the
local FSDO stamp of approval. >grin<
