Steve, what I did on my first coupe was pull off all 4 cylinders and run a hone through them, to get a nice cross-hatch pattern on the cylinder walls, then I bought the next up size rings. Ring set was about 96 bucks, and gaskets about another 50. It worked pretty good. I was getting really bad blow-by, all over the belly. I was using a quart every couple of hours because of the blow-by. After the rings, the blow-by quit, compressions were up and it ran really good. Your A&P would have to sign behind you, or do the work for you- and you have to check the ring end gaps VERY carefully when you install new rings. My coupe had 1800+ hrs since new, and it had about 1200 SMOH, and the pistons and cylinders still measured within NEW specifications according to the overhaul manual. These little baby engines are VERY tolerant and forgiving, you can get away with some mid-life servicing that you can't do on the big, high-power engines. Alas, my poor first coupe- the new owner ran it out of gas and totalled it in a vineyard. Not paying attention to the header tank bobber.
