What I have done to shield by pate is to buy a couple of those dark green slap on sunshades that you can get at Walmart or anywhere else. They are about 5 bucks canadian and stick on to plexi by themselves. I have two windows units, (not the three-piece with a sunshade) and one on each upper half of the window works well. They tend to get brittle after a month or so, but I usually keep a couple extra around, so when i am flying with the windows open (and one window on top) I can slap another shade on for full protection.
