Ya know, Jack, when I got into this crazy flying business,
I was in cahoots with my A&P brother. The plane we bought
was on "lease back" to the local flying club. Whattan adventure!

But that's another (l-o-o-o-n-g story...). Financially, we lost big
for two years and made a coupel bucks two years. I kept the
books, and can remember pretty much how it went.

Basically, when the weather was good and persons were flying
that Cessna 150, it coined money. With my brother doing the
hundred-hour inspections (required if a plane is used for hire),
and me helping him (aka doing most of the work) on the annuals,
we did not get eaten alive by the fixed costs.

Insurance was a Huge Expense. That was because the clubs
we rented from didn't want to be on the hook if anything went
wrong. And we had to pay it before the plane flew hour one.
Maintenance was cheap, as we did most all the work. We
(my brother actually, because he Just Had To Do It) even rebuilt
the O-200 motor in that thing. And fixed the hole-in-the-piston
that occured later. I took the first flight up - my wife has never
forgiven him...

So I say. Gather those that really want to learn to fly and start
a club. Five or ten grand a piece can get a servicable Cessna.
Or even an Ercoupe if you can interest a CFI and examiner
that will go for it.
