Hi Coupers, Thank you for your help and suggestions about tracing tail numbers. I was able to acquire the serial number of the plane in question. With the s/n I was able to use one of the landings.com database search functions to locate my friend's former plane. Turns out that it belongs to a flying club in Austrailia.
