Hi all.
I just pulled #4 cylinder off C-FBMJ [FLAK MAGNET] The compression was
down to 68 PSI. This is testing it with a standard compression gauge.
The other cylinders were 110,110,120 PSI This is the first time I have
actually pulled an aircraft engine apart{partially}. Apart from the
baffling and having to remove the prop and nose bowl, it was very easy.
As I have done nothing but mechanics all my life { auto, marine,
motorcycle, bicycle small engine and just about every kind of old engine
that puffs, bangs or farts }, I found this job quite interesting. The
result, when I got it apart, was a warped exhaust valve seat and a worn
valve guide. I shipped the cylinder off to a shop to have seat and
guide done as well as a light hone of the cylinder. I'll slip a set of
rings on as well, as the end gap was just over spec. While I'm at it
I'm going to change the front seal on the crank. This time I'm going to
shorten the seal spring about 3/8". The design of these seals leaves
lots to be desired. Usually they still leak from new, as they are not
designed to be a good snug fit against the crank. I'm O.M.{Owner
Maintained} so I can do this, much to all the old diehards
consternation.
On the water in the fuel situation, coupes seem to manufacture water
if they sit outside. Even with the caps covered, I used to get at least
an eggcup full every week! One thing that may save your hide, and that
of your plane, is a syphon line made up to vacuum the tanks on a regular
basis. The first time I did mine, I was astounded how much water, paint
chips, pine needles, earwigs and general crap I got from all the tanks.
This is a very simple device that weighs next to nothing and can be
carried in the plane. If anyone isn't sure what I have in mind, let me
know and I'' ll describe it for you.
Auto gas on the wet coast of B.C. works out to $2.65 U.S. for a U.S.
gallon.{We're in litres} Avgas is about $3.43 U.S. for a U.S. gallon.
Oh yes, I can fly my coupe at 30 M.P.H.!!! And I'm petty sure my ASI
is accurate.
