Dear Michael As with any computer-related issue, please provide full details of your system, esp. in this case which browser/version you are using. Have you done any troubleshooting, disabled labs<http://mail.google.com/mail/?labs=0>? Always start with clearing cache and cookies.
In your compose window, to the bottom-right, next to the 'Discard draft' bin icon, make sure it reads 'Saved' before you close your window or browser. IMHO though, a Gmail compose window is not something I would rely on to save my work. It is a web-based application that runs in a web browser.
