My messages are rarely displayed clipped, and then only the extraordinarily long ones. So I would say this is not a normal Gmail thing. (I should check my Google Apps account to see if it is the same. Google Apps and Gmail often differ.) Is it possible your incoming messages have some sort of unusual formatting, so that they are very long in HTML code but display only a paragraph or two?
