Have you tried sending a message to it?  If it truly doesn't exist, there
will be a bounce, and then you'll know that GMail is just preventing that
username because they don't like a word in it.  If it doesn't bounce, it's
possible someone has the account, just has a period in a place you don't
consider logical.
