Andy - i didn't say "100% of sent items are being deleted" i said "they are 
100% disappearing" - so i think you might have misread what i said there as 
i was simply making the points that (a) they were definitely disappearing 
and (b) i wasn't physically going into the sent items folder  in gmail web 
interface to delete them.

Regarding the IMAP issue (or non issue) i was just pointing out that i have 
selected "enable IMAP" in the settings as opposed to POP which i agree in 
hindsight is a completely irrelevant point for which making i apologise.

Anyway - on an even more embarrassing note i have now identified why this 
is happening. It transpires that my shi**y blackberry (which i am issued 
with by my employer and do not use through choice) is set to delete entire 
message conversations instead of individual messages which needless to say 
means that includes sent items. problem solved.

so i will get my coat and leave on this one.............  sorry to waste 
your time both and thanks again for your kind input.
