Jeff, I am not denying the fact that EAS is a licensed product that Google
pays for.
I was asking why Zack says this is the reason for Google dropping it, since
as per the

mentions, EAS has been licensed to Google since early 2009.

Even Microsoft claims to have been surprised by this move, but this could
just be politics. See

I am rather glad that Google are opting for open standards but EAS is still
a very good system.

He is correct about Google being charged a fee.  Actually any company that
allows ActiveSync to be used in their software must pay Microsoft a
licensing fee to use that protocol.  Since there are so many Gmail users, I
guess Google decided it wasn't worth the price of the licensing fee.  I
have found using IMAP is perfectly fine with iOS.
