I recently signed up for a service at a "third-party" (non-Google) site which requires Google Authenticator. It is an important financial service that I have to use. I am going to have to install Google Authenticator and set it up on my tablet computer (I don't have a smart phone) in order to use this financial service.
After I install and set up Google Authenticator on my tablet computer, I still want to be able to log in to gmail *without using Google Authenticator*. The first question I have is, does having Google Authenticator set up mean that I am required to have a code to log in to gmail no matter what computer I use? (Why: I don't always carry my tablet. I want to be able to read my gmail messages when I use a computer at the public library... among other things. Having my Google account locked down by the Authenticator app will inconvenience me. Basically, I want to have a life which Google doesn't control.) I downloaded Google Authenticator to my tablet today, and I want to understand my choices before I set it up. Apparently it is possible to turn Google Authenticator off, as explained here: https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/1064203?hl=en&ref_topic=2784804 So I can keep it turned off most of the time, and when I need to log in to the financial site, I can turn it back on. Will this work? It's a bit of a kluge and time-consuming to keep turning Google Authenticator on and off, but I guess if I have to I will do it that way. However, I might forget to turn Google Authenticator off, in which case I won't be able to access gmail unless I have the tablet on me. It would be better if I could keep Google Authenticator turned on, yet be able to log in to gmail (from other computers) without the code. Can I do that? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Gmail-Users" group.
