I can't help you with disabling the Archive button. But on this one: more importantly .. how do i get the inbox to display as just a full screen > list.. and not automatically open my selected email? >
I can't say this works for Android, but in the PC version, it's called the Preview pane, and if it happens it's because of a Gmail Lab. If you have that Lab enabled, disable it.
