It's not as easy as you might think to gain access to someone's account.
I've been active in the official Gmail Help forum and many of the issues
brought up there are similar to yours, i.e., dealing with account recovery
issues.  You wouldn't believe how many people are unable to regain access
to their own account via the account recovery options.  Many would probably
complain that it's too secure.

You could always enable the 2-step verification option in your Google
account settings.  Just make sure in your security settings that you have
entered a valid recovery email address and a valid cell phone number.  Then
in order for someone to hack into your account, they would not only need to
know your password but would also need to steal your phone.
