​My guess was there is something wrong with the way you entered the address.

I frequently send messages to addresses not in my Gmail Contacts​, and they
work just fine.  Usually I copy-and-paste the address, but typing it in
manually works too.

Remember that an address is of the form "[email protected]".  If there was
a person's actual name or nickname preceding this, it would be handled
differently so that it is not mistaken for another address.
