Whether you know it or not, you are logged into Google (and Gmail), and there is your username and your password which gets you there. I am not sure precisely how it works, but either you stay "permanently" logged in, or the thing that you click, remembers your username and password and sends them for you. That's great ... until something changes and it doesn't do it for you anymore. Do you know *with certainty* what your username and password are? Because if you were to change your login procedure (by enabling 2-step verification), you would probably need to type them in again. As Kenneth notes, many people forget what their passwords are because they don't use them daily. But the password is always a necessary part of being logged in to Gmail.
