That is the way Gmail works. It has nothing to do with Google Groups. When you collapse a message in Gmail, and if the sender's "From" line had a name as well as an address, only the name shows. When you expand the message, the address shows too. However, if the cursor is hovered over the name or picture/avatar, the > person's full Gmail address is visible. If the message is expanded, the > Gmail address is also visible. I have experienced no problems with this, > but it seems like this is an invasion of privacy. > Like I say, this is the way Gmail works, whether you received the message from a Groups discussion, or from anywhere else. Hovering over the sender's picture (or place-holder if he/she has no picture) shows a larger version of the picture, the sender's full name, and address. All of that, I think, are in the email message already. It's just that not everything is displayed up-front for you, the reader of the message. There are many header lines in email messages that are not displayed at all, to keep from cluttering your screen, unless you want to see them (use "Show Original" for that). And since our e-dresses are visible, why can't we write directly to a > particular member who has been helpful? > You can, but you would have to copy-paste their address. Because the message was received from an email list (group), the normal behavior is that a reply goes back to the list or group's address, not to the individual who sent it. This is controlled by the "Reply-To:" line in the header of the messages we all receive. The Reply-To line in this group's messages is: Reply-To: [email protected] And as Marko notes, replying only to an individual when a group is configured to have replies go to the group, is not considered good " netiquette. " I get the feeling you are new to the idea of email lists/groups, despite having used this one for a while . They all work pretty much the same way, in the sense that everyone's message to the list/group gets "blasted" out to everyone else in the list/group, and subscribers to the list or group receive messages that appear to have come from the individual who sent the message. If you don't want your email address, your name, your photo , and what you write to be seen by several other people around the world, then don't sign up for a public list or group like this one, that has thousands of other members. By subscribing to it, and then sending messages to the group, you are effectively sending those email messages, from you, to thousands of other people. This is how email lists/groups work and have worked for decades. Regards, Andy -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Gmail-Users" group.
