1) Good idea, forgot about that.
2) That was in Firefox 2. In Firefox 3+ gmarks uses firefox's history  
service to get the favicons so they show up if you have visited the  
site. You can manually change the preference gmarks.favicons via  
about:config to something other than 'gmarks' and it will ignore the  
history service. Sorry there isn't a better way right now.
