Thanks for the link. The split-tree approach (app in Program Files, data in AppData) is on our long-term wish list. I think the best thing we can do now is to default to a sensible location; maybe this is something that can be changed in an upcoming release.
Maybe C:\Users\<user>\Documents\GMAT, as you say. Or C:\Users\<user>\GMAT. It sounds like perhaps your crashes could be related to MATLAB. This is something that's easier to diagnose. If you have a script that reproduces the crashes, and if you send it to me, I can try to reproduce it here. I'll need to know the version of GMAT you're using (R2013a I assume), and the version and platform of MATLAB you're connecting to. Advice to the question on: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1831810/is-appdata-now-the-correct-place-to-install-user-specific-apps-which-modify-t is more nuanced. I wasted a lot of time trying to get the installer to install in Program Files; the installer should have just asked for elevated privileges, or explained why it couldn't install there. Documents is a better default choice. Install app in Program Files, copy data app will use to User AppData directory. Split tree approach. I wound up installing everything in AppData, just because that's what the installer wanted. Tried the zip bundle; unzipped GMAT refused to recognise Matlab, so could not reproduce crash conditions. Looking at renderings, I don't see why GMAT can't work with integrated graphics; rendering texturemapped balls is not exactly complicated. Laptops with integrated Intel graphics are widely available; I suggest testing with them. Lloyd Wood http://sat-net.com/L.Wood/ ________________________________________ From: Parker, Joel J. K. Yes, as you suspected, the install location is in AppData because it's a per-user install, not a machine-wide install (to avoid needing elevated privileges). GMAT expects to write files to its own directory as a matter of course, so defaulting to a system-wide location like Program Files would break when GMAT is later run as a normal user. Microsoft recommends the AppData location for per-user software, but we've tried to mitigate it somewhat by putting a link to the GMAT folder in the Start menu (Start > Programs > GMAT > GMAT R2013a > Open GMAT folder). An optional Desktop shortcut is a good idea. On my machine, I actually installed it to a location inside my Documents folder, for easy access. The crash is interesting... if it's related to integrated graphics, we unfortunately have no way to reproduce it here (none of our dev machines have Intel graphics). Where did you end up installing GMAT? Does the crash still happen when you obtain GMAT from the .zip bundle instead of the installer? Problem 1: installer insists on putting files in C:\Users\user\AppData\Local\GMAT No desktop shortcuts to this are installed as far as I can see. AppData is usually a hidden directory, so this is an extremely odd choice - to avoid permissions problems on locked-down machines where users do not have admin privileges? Attempted to select elsewhere (e.g. Program Files, or new directory in Program Files), failed. Okay, binary is in GMAT\bin, let's not click the uninstall icon in the main GMAT folder, go. Problem 2: it crashes before displaying any renderings once a script is run. I'm guessing it's not happy with integrated graphics? Toshiba L500-19Z has Intel GMA 4500M HD. Even if it can't work with integrated graphics, it should fail more gracefully. regards Lloyd Wood http://sat-net.com/L.Wood/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ See everything from the browser to the database with AppDynamics Get end-to-end visibility with application monitoring from AppDynamics Isolate bottlenecks and diagnose root cause in seconds.
