AppData is a poor choice for program files. Advice to the question on: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1831810/is-appdata-now-the-correct-place-to-install-user-specific-apps-which-modify-t is more nuanced.
I wasted a lot of time trying to get the installer to install in Program Files; the installer should have just asked for elevated privileges, or explained why it couldn't install there. Documents is a better default choice. Install app in Program Files, copy data app will use to User AppData directory. Split tree approach. I wound up installing everything in AppData, just because that's what the installer wanted. Tried the zip bundle; unzipped GMAT refused to recognise Matlab, so could not reproduce crash conditions. Looking at renderings, I don't see why GMAT can't work with integrated graphics; rendering texturemapped balls is not exactly complicated. Yes, as you suspected, the install location is in AppData because it's a per-user install, not a machine-wide install (to avoid needing elevated privileges). GMAT expects to write files to its own directory as a matter of course, so defaulting to a system-wide location like Program Files would break when GMAT is later run as a normal user. Microsoft recommends the AppData location for per-user software, but we've tried to mitigate it somewhat by putting a link to the GMAT folder in the Start menu (Start > Programs > GMAT > GMAT R2013a > Open GMAT folder). An optional Desktop shortcut is a good idea. On my machine, I actually installed it to a location inside my Documents folder, for easy access. The crash is interesting... if it's related to integrated graphics, we unfortunately have no way to reproduce it here (none of our dev machines have Intel graphics). Where did you end up installing GMAT? Does the crash still happen when you obtain GMAT from the .zip bundle instead of the installer?
