I have reports that things are all working now with the multichannel
playback.  very cool.

I would agree that it should be removed, that by default, unless it is
defined as LEFT/RIGHT/CENTER/ETC, channel 1 through X IN should map to
channel 1 through X OUT.

And as always there are ugly corner cases,

yeah, that sucks.  I wonder just how many of these corner cases are out
there.   Do people in Australia swap left for right?   I don't know if
you read math books, but Martin Gardner has a cool book called " The
ambidextrous universe" that tries to tell the story of how one could
explain the difference of left and right to an alien.  Up and down are
easy to explain...but left and right is more difficult :)
