Hi,You might like to look at Thomson Problem - Points on a Sphere there is the
ability to export the nodal positions of the triangles that form the surface
which can be converted to gmsh format quite easily,

 Subject: [Gmsh] hexagonal surface tiling

Hi All,
Would anyone know if it’s possible to generate a hexagonal / pentagonal surface
tessellation of a sphere?
I’d like to be able to generate a sphere, tesselate the surface in
hexagons/pentagons, then extrude the surface out in the normal direction to
create a mesh of high order prisms.
Something similar to the attached figure.
If it’s only possible to tile the surface with quads, how would I go about
extruding the 2D surface in the normal direction.
Thanks
