Hello Everyone!

Dave Miller (IST DH) apologized Saturday about our 15 Feb 00 meeting
not being in a computer lab, but we had to settle for a regular class room.
I told him it was OK that what we were talking about did not really require
computers. I thought it was a discussion on Perl or something. Later, Dave
in his ever increasing effort to support us decided to give us room 29A. So
in school tonight Chris (NHCTC computer guy) told me that the school is
setting up a separate room for us SLUGs. The school will be clearing out
room 29A and moving in ~10-12 computers for our exclusive use. Room 29A is a
tiny bit smaller, but IT IS ALL OURS!!!!!
Now for the catch. Room 29A is full of stuff and since I was taking
next week off from work(lucky timing) I volunteered myself to help clear out
the room and set up the computers. If anyone could spare the time during the
day or night (except Wednesday night) I would be very grateful!! If we could
get ~6 or people we could get this done in a few hours easily. I also said
that I would help inventory the items in the room. I think a little "Quid
Pro Quo" is long over due to them.
These computers are high Pentiums and low Pentium II with about
32Meg RAM, ~1-2G HD, CD ROM, with 15" monitors and network ready. They are
the computers currently in room 28. I hope the guys that are thinking up the
scenarios for our LBS have their pencils sharpened. We can set up and groom
these computers NOW. Nobody except us will be touching them! It would also
be a great deal easier to set this up from the beginning the way we want it
rather than to tear it apart and reconfigure it. Did I mention that the
school is grossly over stocked with hubs, switches, and routers. I talking
both level II and level III switches! I would be willing to bet that if I
ask we could get the use of these goodies also. For our LBS and regular SLUG
meetings we could set up any scenario we want including a full bandwidth,
micro segmented LAN, and please don't forget that school will have its
second T1 line installed later this month. Since the computers that we have
access to are rather slow I will volunteer to use my second computer for our
cause. It is a AMD k2-475, 6g HD, 192Meg RAM, CD ROM, 17 " monitor with a
NIC. One small problem is that the graphic card will not work in Xwindows. I
have tried for weeks to get it to work, but failed. So I was thinking that
it would make a great back end server. Who needs Xwindows on a server?
Right? Incase anyone was wondering we still can use the 16 computers in room
29. However, we are sharing them and are subject to others changing/deleting
the configuration.
I understand that everyone has jobs and obligations and this is
kinda a short notice, but I could REALLY use your help next week. I planned
to spend next week working on my "Honey-Do" list(I would rather be playing
with computers anyway). I can install Linux with no problem, but I'm not
savvy in network configurations. If Lori and Dave Seidel don't mind maybe we
could post pone the scheduled PHP lecture and one of you Gurus out there
would show us how do network configurations with a level III switch.
One last thing and then I will shut up. I entered on the SLUG
calendar our LBS. I also added what I'm doing and need. If others could do
the same thing then we can all look at it and make sure nothing get missed.
Also if someone wants to help out they can see what we need help in and who
to contact. I need to do this at least for myself because I'm stupid and I
cannot track the dozens of email so far. I'm sure that by the time we get
close to our LBS there will have been hundreds of emails send and I don't
want someone to assume that I'm doing something that in reality I know
nothing about.

Rick
