Actually, they would get their configuration from the server, including the
IP, and bring up the interface so traffic could pass. However, after that had
been done, Red Hat's "pump" DHCP client promptly hung, apparently in an
endless loop (100% CPU use). I'll be working on tracking down the cause of
this.

I'm fairly confident we can get this working. Besides, it would look rather
bad to potential future Linux users if we can't even get our own LAN up and
running....

No, stupid people would ignore everything, content in their ignorance. You
want to learn. That's the essential difference. :-)

This is something I'm really looking forward to doing. I want to have as
many different distributions as possible running on different machines in this
lab. It would be a great resource for those trying to choose the best
distribution for their needs, or those who simply want to expand their Linux
knowledge. It would also be great for "try them yourself" demonstration
purposes.

If anyone can provide copies of the following, I would be much obliged:

  - Mandrake 7.0
  - SuSE 6.3
  - Slackware 7.0
  - Caldera OpenLinux 2.3
  - Corel Linux
  - A *working* Debian "slink"
  - Any distro for the SPARC (Sun)
  - Any other distribution you like

I stress "working" for Debian because I tried to install from one of the CDs
Dan York was giving away, and... well, let's just say that things didn't work
as intended.

We need someone to act as a "technical coordinator" with this, otherwise
we're going to be stepping all over each other with conflicting installs,
packages, etc. I'll volunteer (I like this sort of thing) if no one else
wants the job.
