In a worst case situation, you should be able to do a stand-alone boot. I 
always keep a single diskette bootable linux. Once loaded, I can mount 
the root and other file systems from the suspected system. If you don't 
have a stand-alone diskette, you should be able to boot from your 
distribution. Once you get the installer, you should be able to access the 
command line by using alt-F[2-6]. Note that /bin/sh is normally a 
symbolic link to bash. If either of these is gone you will have the same 
symptom. 

Other things to check are to make sure you did not change partitions. 
You should be able to get into single user mode. (unless you no longer 
have bash).

Assuming that your file systems are correct, and that somehow you blew 
away a library, you should be able to do a quick install of the base 
system, or just a few components.
