I used to get those all the time when I first tried building my own kernel.
You have several compression choices when configuring PPP. I only got it to
work when I selected all of them and built the kernel with them liked in (not
as modules). I suppose I could have tried harder to figure out what was going
on, but once I got it working my motivation kinda lapsed.
