You do _NOT_ want to start learning Perl on Win32. No no no no bad.
Now that that's out of my system, some suggestions - O'Reilly has a
book/resource kit for Win32. From what I've seen of them, both the book
and the resource kit could be useful. (I refuse to purchase either for
religious reasons.)
As for differences - there are a few. The work of ActivePerl
(www.activeperl.com) has not been without fruition, however, and they've
managed to create a usable (barely) port of Perl and several common
packages. Be warned, though, you may find several pieces of Perl code
you've discovered on the web somewhere that you want to use that will
take some major re-writes to get working. Specifically, differences in
fork() calls and opening to pipe streams drive me up the wall.
I remember seeing a saying at one point in wandering around Win32 Perl
pages (Yes, I'm actually forced to code Win32 Perl at work) that went
something like this - 'The motto of Perl is "There's More Than One Way
To Do It", which is a good thing, because in Win32, usually only one way
actually works' (My apologies to mangling whoever's quote this was).
Sadly, this is true - you'll have more headaches doing Win32 Perl code
than Linux. I'm always glad I learned Perl in a Linux environment, and
am trying hard to move my current work-related Win32 Perl scripts to
Linux.
Which reminds me...anyone here have experience in talking to MS SQL Server
6.5 from a Linux box with Perl? (Without having to install some kind of
extra server application on a Windows box to get it to work) I haven't been
able to figure it out yet...Thanks
