This is really a question of disto, which leads you to init scripts.. RedHat
usually keeps all of its init scripts in /etc/rc.d/init.d. On startup, init
then looks at /etc/rc.d/rcX.d, where 'X' is the runlevel it's starting. In the
case of RedHat, there is also a way to configure these in linuxconf, under
Control/Control Panel/Control Service Activity.
