Your font server is acting up. Unfortunately it's none too helpful reporting
why! ;)
Assuming you haven't erased all of your fonts (aie!) you might make sure you
have free disk space to create temp files (like whatever partition /tmp is
on). Also check permissions on /tmp to make sure it's read/write for all.

Some more off the top of my gigantic, deformed head:

If the font path has changed and is pointing to directories that don't exist
it will fail.

If any of your fonts are corrupted (have you installed any new ones? mix and
matched truetypes with normal fonts?) it will fail. You can move all fonts
but known ones to see if this is the problem.

If networking ain't working, then the font server won't either.

It might not have anything to do with the "fixed" font either. Like I said,
it sucks at reporting the "why".
