I upgraded from SuSE 6.2 to SuSE 6.3(intel) about a month ago and I
have a couple of video issues (which appear to be related to horizontal
sync).
First, mostly in Netscape my text cursor shows up as just a couple of
flashing dots, barely perceptable.

Secondly, when I log out of KDE, instead of the lower intensity, I get
vertical bands. I see that same thing when I move windows in Star Office.

I am using the exact same XF86Config that I was under SuSE 6.2.

I have checked and altered font paths, etc. I don't have TrueType fonts on
the system.

I know that both my hsynch and vertical synch are correct. I have the
manual for the monitor (DEC FR-PCXBV-KA). I compared the settings to
the one on my Red Hat 6.1 install on my Alpha which shares the same
monitor. The video card is an AGP Expert@work with 4MB. I am at
1024x768.

When I run SAX, once I get to the screen to configure modes, everything
freezes. The system responds to ping from the Alpha, but not ftp. In
addition, Before I went to that screen I ran a short script on another
virtual terminal which sleeps for a while, issues a wall, then reboots.

Also note that the behaviour is the same if I have networking shut off. My
current environment is the result of an upgrade, but I think I had the same
behavior when I did a clean install. I also rolled back to the previous
version of the mach64 driver. Also, XF86Setup is also unusable for a
different reason, but ctl-alt-backspace works.

Everything else runs fine. I reported a couple of issues earlier, but they
were cockpit errors.

I may decide to downgrade back to SuSE 6.2, or at least for X. I am
using a 2.2.13 kernel with Pentium instructions enabled and math
emulation disabled. If anyone can give me a few clues. I would like to
know what solves the problem so when I run into it again (at an
installfest) I can provide solutions. I have a newer PCI video, but I don't
have any free IRQs. Since I have run sax from a non-graphic -non-
network run level, I am either hitting a bug in Sax or in the mach64 driver.
