I can't help much wrt the standard client (except to note the *file* listing
trick: "get README |more"  with no space between | and more)

ncftp is a nicer cmdline ftp client, with paging and even file and
command completion.

And btw, pressing "Shift-PageUp" will scroll back at Linux Console and
in xterm (but won't always catch all of a big listing).
