You should be able to use fetchmail for yourself and leave everyone else's 
mail alone.

At least with my ISP (mindspring) both my wife and I have our own mailboxes, 
but only 1 actual account.  I download my e-mail using fetchmail and it never 
touches hers.  I read my e-mail on a Linux system, she reads hers on an NT 
system with Outlook.

You shouldn't need to set up a mail server unless you want to.
