I"m trying to configure an old Dell Dimension XPS P90 for use as a LAN
gateway/firewall. Red Hat Linux 6.1 installation was relatively
uneventful--at least after I pried off the cover to see what sort of
SCSI host adapter might be inside--but I find myself unable to get it
to find the 3c503-16 ISA NIC in the box.
I downloaded 3Com's DOS-based diagnostics for the card and booted a
DOS floppy. The diagnostic program set the NIC to use IRQ 3, DMA 1,
and the internal transceiver. The diagnostics had no trouble finding
the NIC and getting it to speak to the network through the RJ-45
interface (I watched the lights on the hub to be sure).
Here's my /etc/conf.modules:
alias scsi_hostadapter aha152x
options aha152x aha152x=0x340,11,7,1,1
options eth0 xcvr=0 io=0x300 irq=3
alias eth0 3c503
On reboot (following a hardware power bounce to be sure), Linux hadn't
found the NIC and only the aha152x module was loaded. So I tried to
load the 3c503 by hand and got this:
root@bcah /etc]# insmod 3c503 xcvr=0 io=0x300 irq=5
/lib/modules/2.2.12-20/net/3c503.o: unresolved symbol ei_open
/lib/modules/2.2.12-20/net/3c503.o: unresolved symbol ethdev_init
/lib/modules/2.2.12-20/net/3c503.o: unresolved symbol ei_interrupt
/lib/modules/2.2.12-20/net/3c503.o: unresolved symbol ei_close
[root@bcah /etc]#
which I don't like at all. Does anyone have any suggestions?
(Suggestions along the lines of, "Go get a NIC that's younger than you
are!" while perhaps prudent, will be rejected as lacking the proper
spirit of adventure.)
Thanks,
Roger
