Jerry,
        I had a similar problem when I built a Windoze box with (at the time)
advanced hardware. I ended up having to 1) Flash the BIOS with the
latest release 2) get special drivers from the MB manufacturer for
Win95/98 because Windoze can't work properly with the hardware (one
problem was IRQ assignment) 3) get a patch for Win98 from AMD and 4)
reduce the amount of RAM I had from 256MB to 192MB because although I
have 1MB of L2 cache, and the motherboard can cache 256MB, Windoze can't
deal with it. The basic problem is that Windoze was not designed to take
advantage of high end (or even mid-range) hardware, so it doesn't know
what to do with it.
