  Keep in mind that on regular, shared ethernet, collision rates as high as
80% are not unheard of.  It is sub-optimal, as you say, but then, so is the
rest of ethernet.  If you want optimal, use FDDI.  ;-)

  Heck, Windows does that on a cross-over cable.  ;-)

  The company I work for is currently running a special on 3Com OfficeConnect
unmanaged ethernet switches.  Supports dual-speed and full-duplex operation. I
think you can get the four port model for under $200, and the eight port for
under $300.  They are quiet and work very well.  Send me a private email if
