Ken,

  I haven't done any benchmarking, so I can't speak to wether they're
better or not, but I'm using a Tekram DC-390U2B, and I've been extremely
happy with it.  It's substantially less than the comparable Adaptec.
You'll probably want the U2W model, which has both a 50-pin and 68-pin
connector.  May be worth checking out.  

www.pricewatch.com will have good prices.
