True and not true. As president, TR was a "republican." He was a very
rogue republican, someone who was very popular with the people but was
rather an embarrassment to the Republican Party.

To isolate TR, the Republican Party establishment came up with a very
novel idea. In order to shut TR up they nominated him for Vice President --
TR couldn't refuse. Of course, the duty of the VP is to cut ribbons and
echo whatever the president says. The party found a way to use TR's
popularity to their advantage without having to worry about him doing
anything dangerous.

This plan worked wonderfully -- until McKinley died and the Republicans
discovered that they had a loose cannon sitting in the White House. These
differences between TR and the Republican Party would later cause TR to
become a member of the Progressive (Bull Moose) Party.

End of HIS101. See you guys in class Monday. :-)
