I'd say as a rough estimate monitor is about 1/2 of the power consumption
(or maybe a bit more, depends on details).

When I was buying some UPS's I found this site to be useful for estimating
the power consumption of the parts:

    http://www.apcc.com/template/size/workstation/single/index.cfm

E.g. for my wife's linux box:

        Mini_Tower/K6-2/333MHz/2_HD
                No monitor: 74 W
                w/17" monitor: 164 W (diff: 90 W)

Also, instead of switching off the monitor consider putting it in
the screensaver in ~/.xinitrc:

        xset +dpms
        xset dpms 1500 1900 2400

When the monitor goes into full DPMS mode it is only using about 5-10 W
if IIRC.
