There were several parts on which I agree with this sentiment.  It took me 
quite some time to "get into" it, as I'm not really a sci-fi fan.

I was also a little disappointed with the ending, but overall I really enjoyed 
the book.

Don't know, never read any of his stuff either.  Actually, the only reason I 
even read Diamond Age was because I read Cryptonomicon, which I think is one 
of the best technical fiction books I've ever read.  I really thought it was 
right up there with Clancy as far as technical fiction.
