Hi,
Finally I have some time, so I can answer. I just downloaded almost 600
messages.
Anyway, rebuilding the kernel is pretty easy. Just untar it, go to the source,
make config, choose what you want in it, and make bzImage;make modules; make
modules_install. Then the modules are gonna be in /lib/modules/kernelversion/.
Then you copy arch/i386/boot/bzImage (?) to whereever you want it with a better
name, like linux-2.2.16-zipdrive. vi /etc/lilo.conf, lilo, reboot, and pray. Of
course you can have more kernels, so it's a good idea to keep the older
kernels, so you can boot them with lilo, if the new one doesn't work.
System.map is mostly for fuser. You normally won't use it, so it doesn't really
matter. If you have some problem, let us know.
