One doesn't really need a dedicated firewall. Just use ipchains
on the machine that connects to the internet (if there's just one
that works out fine.)
Some time ago I wrote some ipfwadm (pre cursor to ipchains) shell
scripts for a small university that wanted to protect a couple linux
boxes, but was not ready to go with full firewalling of the
university.
