Ask about this on LKML. This discussion comes up a lot there... mostly in
reference to what a bad implementation of the algorithm the kernel uses to
decide which processes to kill off when OOM occurs (which it is, largely
due to a lack of appropriate accounting). Several people have daemons that
watch available memory, and I'm sure they'll be glad to tell you about
them.
But, if you do post on LKML, be prepared to be flamed...
