I agree that on a small system with single disk you don't need to make a
bunch of partitions but a few is sometimes a good thing. This is what I
recommend after having lots of problems and installing various
distributions:

        * swap partition double of your ram
        * /boot of 20M to save your extra kernel images when installing 
          new distro/reinstalling 
        * / and /home split for the rest of the avaliable space. I do this
          because I find that when I install a new distro if I save /home
          I have next to nothing to reconfigure my personal apps just
          reinstall them and also its annoying to have to backup your data
          to some other disk then stick back in /home after you install
