I am well aware of the click of death, which is why I do not keep a
cartridge inserted unless I want to use it. I have been burned by tapes
too. I was trying to restore a backup a few years ago and the tape
despooled. Luckily, that was very shortly after I bought the Jaz drive, and
the Jaz had a good backup. IMHO, the most reliable backups are on CD-Rs,
but they lack capacity.
In other words, if backups are important get a good backup system, whcih
may cost a few bucks. (BTW: I have had tapes ruined on commercial Digital
drives as well as on 9 track mainframe drives).
