First, /dev/cua0 is the same port as /dev/ttyS0. The difference is that the 
cua0 was designed to use modem controls. The listong below is from my SuSE 
6.4 system.
crw-rw----   1 root     uucp       5,  64 May  8 11:34 /dev/cua0
crw-rw-rw-   1 root     uucp       4,  64 May  8 11:34 /dev/ttyS0
You might double check the device numbers to see if they may have changed 
when you installed FreeBSD.
